Diabetes and Resveratrol
Resveratrol is a phytonutrient (good stuff) found in red wine and several other foods. This is one of the key ingredients that you hear so much about when researchers address the benefits of drinking red wine. However, you don't have to knock back a few drinks these days to get the resveratrol benefits. It's also found in grape seed extract, and some companies are now isolating resveratrol and selling it as a health supplement.
What are the benefits? Recently resveratrol was shown to influence glucose regulation and carbohydrate metabolism, suggesting anti-hyperglycemic potential. In fact, a study in Chemical and Biological Interactions (11/19/08) found that diabetic rats on an oral consumption of resveratrol (5 mg/kg body weight) for 30 days demonstrated a significant decline in blood glucose indicating improved blood sugar levels. Further research is in progress to determine other benefits of resveratrol. A great website to get affordable resveratrol and other supplements is www.vitacost.com.
