60 Minutes Praises Resveratrol
Resveratrol appears to be one of the most potent antioxidants and shows real promise of health benefits. It is found in grape skins and seeds and therefore red wine (muscatine grapes in particular). However, this isn't an advertisement for drinking. In fact, you would have to drink 30 plus bottles of wine daily to get the high doses of resveratrol benefits. Other sources include cocoa, dark chocolate and certain nuts. A slew of supplement makers are now manufacturing and marketing resveratrol as an antioxidant supplement. Benefits include protecting cells from free radical damage, thereby, inhibiting the spread of cancer (particularly prostrate cancer), lowering blood pressure, insulin regulation, and improving the elasticity of blood vessels. Resveratrol also has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and may help to prevent Alheimer's disease. It has also been shown to normalize the inflammatory response of the body. With so many benefits, resveratrol appears to slow down some age related diseases and may be seen as an anti-aging supplement in the future as researchers determine the appropriate recommended dose.
